Natalie & hamish’s Colourful Summer Wild Flower Wedding at Cairns Farm Estate
Natalie and Hamish’s super-fun colourful summer wedding took place at one of our favourite new venues Cairns Farm Estate which is near Edinburgh. This barn style venue has beautiful modern finishing and, unusually for a barn venue, lots of light. We loved working here and the flowers really brought the space to life.
Colourful Summer Wedding Flowers with relaxed natural look
The bride and groom wanted beautiful bright colours which really popped against the more neutral tones of the venue decor. We used mainly Scottish grown seasonal flowers with a few imported roses to achieve a relaxed natural wild flower look. Some of the flowers we used included Sweet William, Aquilegia, Nepeta, Astrantia, Peonies, Geum, Ranunculus, and campanula among many others. The wedding was in early June which is when the cutting garden really hits its stride and you get beautiful early summer flowers as well as some later spring blooms.
Natalie’s bridal bouquet and the bridesmaid bouquet were filled with gorgeous bright seasonal flowers that really created a fun and joyous feel to the décor. We wired small headed flowers for Natalie’s hair stylist to weave into her hair above her veil.
Gent’s Buttonholes with thistle and twine
For Hamish and the groomsmen’s buttonholes we created thistle buttonholes with a twine binding to suit the rustic barn venue including sprigs of pink heather for a pop of colour and foliage such as box and rosemary which added scent to the design.
Making table flowers personal with lab glassware
The couple both work in science so they collected lots of different lab glassware like beakers and conical flasks to decorate the long wooden banquet style tables. This was a really unique way to decorate the space and made their décor more personal to them. We filled the “vases” with brightly coloured seasonal flowers creating a wild flower effected dotted down the table. The wild flower style arrangements really worked well in contrast against the clean lines of the science equipment and was a great personal twist on the trend for jam jars and bottles as table flowers.
For the signing table in the ceremony space we used a vintage wedgewood vase filled with bright seasonal flowers which could then be easily moved to the reception space afterwards. It’s always good to have designs that can be moved and repurposed at different points in the day so that you can make the most of your flowers.
decorating thE wedding cake
We worked with the cake maker to add arrangements of fresh flowers to each tier of the beautiful wedding cake. We always wire and tape the stems of all flowers and add them to the cake using cake picks so that no raw stems are inserted directly into the cake. This is especially important as some flowers are not safe to eat or if imported may have been treated with non food safe chemicals in transport.
