The byre at inchyra - scottish barn wedding venues
Have you booked The Byre at Inchyra for your wedding? Amazing if so! I love this amazing, historic Scottish barn wedding venue and I know you’re going to have the most incredible day there!
The Byre at Inchyra is set amidst the beautiful, green Perthshire countryside. I’ve worked there a few times over the years and every wedding has been unique and different. It’s a blank canvas and couples can (and do!) go all out to make it their own.
Outdoor wedding ceremonies at The Byre at Inchyra
There are a number of ceremony spaces at the Byre. Outside in the Walled Garden (well, actually anywhere outside on the 150 acre estate!) or two options inside the venue itself - in the Stable Room which is suitable for up to 110 guests or the Lower Byre which holds up to 160 guests.
It’s so great that the venue has that flexibility, especially in the summer when you really want to be making the most of any sunshine that Scotland gets! When the weather is playing ball couples tend to hold their ceremony in the Walled Garden and then head up towards the main barn to enjoy drinks just outside the huge blue barn doors. This is the perfect spot for post ceremony hugs, mingling and lawn games.
Whilst it’s true that couples can say their vows anywhere within the acres of private grounds and woodlands, the Walled Garden is by far the most popular location for an outdoor ceremony at the Byre. Depending on the time of year the garden may already be bursting with colour from the abundance of flowers and trees. However, these are all an added bonus and it’s still nice to add additional flowers to the area you’re getting married. This brings focus to your ceremony and physically marks the spot itself.
A lot of couples choose to hold their ceremony just in front of the wee summer house, flanked by two apple trees. These are a fab focal point and I try to make use of them as much as possible. In the past I’ve placed floral arches in between the trees, which always looks great, or you could do something really fun with the trees themselves. There’s loads of potential here to really go to town - dress them with swags or colourful flowers, adorn them with ribbons or hang flower hoops from the branches.
Colourful floral wedding arches
I’m a big fan of wedding arches, but if you are thinking of moving your arch from the Walled Garden up to the Byre then it’s important to pick a frame design that’s easily movable. Now, the venue team are pretty expert at moving things around - they’ve got some great wee trailers which are very helpful - but I always err on the side of caution when it comes to relocating bigger pieces. If an arch or similar structure is being moved from where it was originally installed then there’s always a chance that flowers might move or dislodge. That’s not to put you off having an arch - far from it - but it’s worth keeping this in mind when you’re choosing a design.
If you head over to my wedding gallery you’ll find lots of ideas for arch frames. The big circular one is easily moved as are broken or pillar arches. These are two curving or upright forms rather than one whole rectangular or horseshoe piece. They’re much more manoeuvrable and a great focal point for a Walled Garden ceremony.
Equally, if arches aren’t your thing, then why not have two pedestal arrangements, or florals on barrels or plinths. They’ll still draw the eye towards you two and your ceremony area before they can be relocated up to the main barn.
Your wedding colour theme
The Byre, as a blank canvas venue, is ideal for couples wanting to put their own stamp on a place. I have to say, I absolutely relish any chance to go to town with colours and florals so you can imagine how overjoyed I am whenever I take a booking for a wedding here!
I love using florals and foliage to draw attention to the aisle, and to lead eyes down to the two of you. Meadow boxes are great for this, plus they bring those extra pops of colour to the garden. Alternatively you can use jam jars filled with florals (get family and friends to help you decorate them) or even tie posies to the chairs. Personally I think it’s good to pick things that are easily moved up to the barn and have their own water source. The latter is especially important in hot weather! Posies tied to chairs look good but can wilt quickly when it’s warm. That may not be an issue for you if you only need them to last as long as the ceremony but it’s worth noting that fresh flowers without water do have limitations!
Wedding ceremony at the Byre at Inchyra
There are two ceremony spaces within the main barn - the Stable Room and the Lower Byre. My couples have always said their vows in the Stable Room, just off to the side of the main barn. This is a great space and the venue can rent you their impressive willow arch. The amazing structure is a real focal point in the room and looks incredible when decorated with flowers. You can also hang floral or ribbon backdrops on the back wall to bring colours into the room.
The aisle in the Stable Room is pretty narrow so I don’t tend to put anything down it. Purely for ease of guests taking their seats and people walking up and down the aisle. You don’t want to be tripping over anything!
To be honest though, you can do so much in the room that it really doesn’t matter if you leave the aisle ‘as is’. Suspend things from the ceilings, hang backdrops, flowers and foliage from the walls - soften the space up a little with colour! As there aren’t many windows in the venue it’s good to have candles and fairy lights within your decor as well as some paler colours in your flowers. Just to make things pop a wee bit. Don’t be afraid to lean into the cosy, moody feel of the space if that’s your thing. I’ve used some amazing dark, jewel tones in that room, but it’s still worth having one or two lighter accent colours just to help those lovely flowers pop and not recede into the darkness.
Colourful wedding receptions within the Byre
The Byre is a lovingly restored, atmospheric barn with beautiful stone walls and high, oak beamed ceilings. The neutral, earthy tones mean that really, anything goes colourwise. There’s no wallpaper or carpets to clash with!
The world really is your oyster when it comes to decor here, there’s so much space, and with those high ceilings, you can go as dramatic as you like. Equally, more understated decor works well too without detracting from the natural beauty of the Byre.
Couples have a choice between more traditional round tables, or the Byre’s specially made trestles. They’re wider than your usual long tables, ideal for sharing plates and table decoration.
When it comes to florals the most popular is using bud vases, bottles or jars dotted around the tables. It’s easy to move them out of the way if needed - caterers appreciate that if you’re having sharing platters! Plus your guests can chat across tables to each other without their views being blocked by huge arrangements. Scattering loose foliage amongst the bud vases looks great on trestle tables, the green against the bare wood of the tables is a fab look and softens things up a bit.
Alternatively you may prefer tall, dramatic arrangements in there, taking advantage of those soaring ceilings. These work especially well if you aren’t having any hanging pieces (more on those in a bit!) Think really tall vases, wild treelike arrangements or Harlow stands with flowers above headheight to create a more elevated floral scene - again, we don’t want to create any barriers to guests chatting across tables!
Creating a magical, woodland feel
There is so much scope for hanging pieces in this room. I love challenging myself here! Hoops of greenery and flowers, plus little glass baubles containing tealights are so effective and bring in a bit of extra, soft lighting. If you really want to go for the rustic, woodland effect then hanging branches are a great way to achieve this. To bring focus to the top table and other key areas you can use hanging planks of flowers and foliage. These also bring in those all important pops of colour too. If you’re concerned about budget consider concentrating your spend on hanging pieces above the top table to make it a real focal point.
The Byre has tiered metal chandeliers, they hold candles - again, lovely soft lighting - and I’ve dressed them with loose, light greenery. Just to soften the metal up a wee bit. The back wall is another great area to decorate, I’ve put together all kinds of hanging decor - hoops, branches, ribbon backdrops, floral backdrops…anything to draw people’s attention to the top table plus it makes a good backdrop for speeches too. This is a part of the room that will likely feature in a lot of photos so really make it stand out!
Just a tip for you, when it comes to logistics please chat to your suppliers so you know who needs to get into the space and when is best for them. As a florist it’s ideal if I can get in and put together my hanging pieces before catering start setting up tables and glassware. Inevitably there’ll be a few leaves and greenery floating down onto the tables as I’m mid process! Once I’m done and swept up then the way is clear for caterers to come in and do their thing. It’s good to get your suppliers chatting to each other and making them aware of different schedules so that we can all collaborate. We all want the very best for you and your wedding.
Weddings at the Byre at Inchyra
The dance floor area is edged by long feeding troughs, left over from the barn’s original occupants! These are fab to decorate, and I’ve done a variety of things here from filling them with meadow boxes, resplendent with colourful flowers and plants, to having them filled with water with candles, petals and flowers floating on the surface. This looks amazing in the evening. The lights twinkle away as people head over to the dance floor. Hanging pieces above the water also look lovely, the reflection of hoops and loose, trailing greenery in the water gives a great effect.
Other areas to think about dressing are your cards/gift table, seating plan, any tables of photos and of course the cake. In all of these spaces I’ve used a variety of meadow boxes, crates, bottles and cases. Just to bring in pops of colour and draw attention. In the spring and summer, when guests are more likely to spill out onto the lawn, couples like me to do some arrangements in milk churns. These work really well just outside those amazing barn doors. They signpost guests and take your wedding theme and colours out onto the lawn. Little touches like this really bring the whole space - Byre, Walled Garden and lawn - together.
