When life gives you lemons make lemonade, they say and that is exactly what our lovely autumnal couple Emma and Jono did. Despite the nightmare year that Covid-19 gave us all in 2020 they were determined to still get married on their original date in the late summer autumn and re-planned their wedding as a beautiful relaxed micro-wedding.
From Wedding to Micro Wedding
From the get-go Emma knew she wanted autumnal colours and rustic barn wedding style flowers so when they re-planned their wedding to be a mini-wedding in an Air B n B in the country this worked out perfectly, if not better than their original grand wedding venue.
One of the great things about micro weddings is that they let you make the wedding all about what you and your partner really want. They are small, relaxed and totally personal so you can get creative and forget worrying about chair covers or long lost relatives you feel you “have” to invite!
The bridal flowers
Emma had seen photos of one of our beautiful autumnal weddings at Dalduff and fallen in love with the loose romantic shape of the wild flower style bouquet and the earthy autumnal colours. Her bridesmaids were in a beautiful burnt orange shade so we used lots of locally grown late summer flowers to create unique and seasonal bouquets to tone in. These included favourites like sunflowers, dahlias and coreopsis as well as rosehips, grasses and amaranthus among many other ingredients to give each piece a lovely variety of texture, movement and shape.
Late summer / early autumn is a great time to get married as there is still plenty growing in the cutting garden but you start to also get lovely grasses, seed heads and other dried elements that can make for a really unusual bouquet or floral design.
Buttonholes, corsages and floral combs
For the groom and his groomsmen we created matching buttonholes with sedum, berries and herbs and we also made some lovely autumnal corsages for the female guests on bracelets, while the bridesmaids also had matching floral combs to wear.
Decorating a micro wedding reception
Taking notes on all the Coronavirus guidelines guest numbers were small enough to meet the restrictions and each table had hand sanitiser and masks available as well as, pen and paper to leave track and trace details and a cheeky cardboard cut out of Nicola Sturgeon to remind everyone to be on their best social distancing behavior!
We created a wild seasonal backdrop on a trellis behind the top table using gorgeous Scottish grown flowers from the Briar Rose cutting garden and other Scottish growers which provided a perfect backdrop for photos during the reception at added a bit of colour to the room. True to our sustainable moto we didn’t use any floral foam for this. (Check out our blog post on why floral foam is bad for environment).
Table flowers for a rustic wedding
We also created a lush flower and greenery garland in front of the couple and dressed the other tables and candelabra with trailing ivy and other foliage such as honeysuckle and ferns. This looked great against the natural wood of the guest tables and worked with the wood slices and rustic laid back feel of the day.
