Alison and Richard’s colourful wild flower filled summer wedding at Glasgow’s House for an Art lover was such a joyful bright celebration. Just as the cutting garden was taking off, flowers were blooming and we were all finally out of lockdown this super laid back fun couple had the most beautiful colour-filled at one of Glasgow’s iconic venues.
Seasonal bright flowers
Alison and John wanted fun bright colours to fill the venue which was right up my street! Early summer flowers are great for their zingy colours and they worked really well in the muted colours of the venue. We used lots of Scottish grown flowers from Keeping the Plot in fife and from the Briar Rose cutting garden as well as one or two imported things like peonies and spray roses. The bright colours really popped against the lush green of the bridesmaids’ dresses. We used flowers such as anemones, poppies, perennial cornflower, ranunculus, foxgloves, alchemilla mollis, geum, nepeta and even chives!
Setting the scene
We lined the aisle in the beautiful morning room of House for an Art lover with colourful jars of seasonal flowers creating a meadow effect and filling the room with a beautiful scent. These were later moved to the reception and really transformed the space. On the tables and in the windows we added bottles of flowers alongside these jars to vary the heights and create interest. The colours looked great against the warm dark grey of this space.
We also added some arrangements of flowers to each tier of the cake to tie everything together. We always wire and tape the ends of any flowers going in cakes and then put them in cake picks so there are now raw or exposed stems going into your cake.
Buttonholes and hair flowers
For the bride and her bridesmaids we wired a mixture of individual small flowers like Spray Roses and Sweet William for their hair stylist to weave into their hair styles. For the gents we made buttonholes of thistle, billy buttons (one of my favourite ingredients but I’ve not managed to grow them successfully yet!) and spray roses tied with teal ribbon.
Wild flower weddings aren’t just for barns...
Sometimes people think that if you are getting married in a formal or traditional venue you can’t have a “wild flower” feel wedding but these pictures really show how the fun colours and textures of the flowers really complement and contrast against the clean lines and colours of MacIntosh’s famous house.
After a long winter and lockdown everyone was ready for a celebration and the colourful flowers at this wedding really captured the mood.
