If you’re looking for inspiration for a colourful spring wedding look no further. Spring is always a great time of year for seasonal flowers and there’s always something joyful about seeing so many blooms after a long British winter but Katy and Andrew’s colourful May wedding at Edinburgh’s Riddles Court was especially fun as it was jam packed with Scottish grown wild flowers in bright fun spring colours.
I used Scottish grown flowers from the Briar Rose cutting garden and Millpond Flower farm as well as some Dutch flowers to capture the natural laid back feel of the couple and mirror the season.
Katy and Andrew got married in Edinburgh’s historic old town in the beautiful Riddle’s Court near Edinburgh Castle. It’s a great location for smaller intimate weddings and you have so many perfect corners to take striking pictures in. The colourful flowers in Katy and Andrew’s wedding photos (by Claire Juliet Paton Photography) really pop against the stone of the old buildings on the Royal Mile.
For the wedding ceremony in the Geddes room upstairs at Riddles court I created a bold seasonal pedestal arrangement for the front of the room. It was filled with scented lilac, peonies and tulips among other things and we lined the aisle with jars filled with spring wild flowers. The bright colours worked brilliantly with the wood paneling in the room which really made the colours come to life and the scent of the lilac filled the room and greeted guests as they made their way up the stairs to the ceremony.
Katy’s bouquet was filled with bright spring wild flowers and blousy peonies and was shaped into a teardrop style. For her bridesmaids we created colourful mix and match wrist corsages on silk ribbons. For the Groom, Andrew, we made a rustic thistle buttonhole mixed with flowers to match in with Katy’s wedding bouquet and the other wedding flowers, and tied with two tone bright ribbon which looked great against his tweed jacket.
For the reception we lined the tables with airy foliage and more vases of colourful bright spring flowers and the venue staff moved some of the aisle flowers in jars down from the ceremony to the tables and mantelpiece for the dinner. It’s always great to re-use your ceremony flowers in the reception space if you can and these bright spring wild flower jars made perfect gifts for the guests to take home with them. We also created small clusters of bright flowers for the wedding cake bringing a pop of colour to each tier.
"Mel was the perfect florist for our wedding. She took our brief - spring brights - and ran with it, creating more wonderful arrangements than we ever could have imagined. The flowers for our ceremony were spectacular and all our guests couldn't stop asking about them. The flowers for our tables, my bouquet and for the family corsages and buttonholes were all equally gorgeous and unique." Katy
